Airport Oak, Quercus alba From a Bill Emory photo

The second largest White Oak in VA grows near the Albemarle Airport runway. It was almost cut down in 2006 due to visibility issues for pilots. Recently the 1875 church and an entire hillside were removed. A fence encloses the area due to deer hunters. Visitors can gain access to the tree through the Airport Authority.

The crown on this possibly 300 year old tree is full and glossy. VanYahres Arborists donated, installed and maintain lightning protection.

Great Horned Owl, Crow, Red Tailed Hawk, Screech Owl. Cottontail Rabbit, Brown Moth, Eastern Gray Squirrels
